6 Wickedly Delicious Cocktails for Defying Gravity
We’ll be dancing through life with these sips in hand!
With the upcoming release of the film adaptation of Wicked on November 22nd, we’re celebrating the magic of Oz by sharing six yummy recipes for you to mix up at home! Whether you’re looking for an appropriately green tipple or some other shimmering beauty, we’ve no doubt you’ll be enchanted by each of these recipes.

1. The Wicked Witch of the West
AKA The Basil Gimlet
First, we’ll be paying to tribute to Elphaba herself with this vibrant green concoction boasting cucumber, citrus, and aromatic basil. Nothing is ever gonna bring you down when you’re enjoying a glass of this delightful refresher!
Ingredients
- 2 oz Empress 1908 Cucumber Lemon Gin
- ¾ oz Fresh Lime Juice
- ¾ oz Simple Syrup
- 5-6 Basil Leaves
- Cucumber Ribbon, for garnish
Method
Add liquid ingredients and basil into a cocktail shaker and gently muddle to release aromatics. Shaker over ice to chill and fine-strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with cucumber ribbon on a cocktail pick and enjoy!
2. Gonna Be Popular
AKA The Rosé French 75 by @takestwoeggs
Next, we have this dazzling twist on the already-fabulous French 75 that captures the glamour of Glinda the Good. With a charming pink hue and touch of added sparkle, it’s bound to be po-pu-lar!
Ingredients
- 1½ oz Empress 1908 Indigo Gin
- ½ oz Fresh Lemon Juice
- ½ oz Simple Syrup
- 3 oz Sparkling Rosé
- Pinch of Edible Cocktail Glitter (optional)
- Lemon Twist, for garnish
Method
Add the gin, simple syrup, and lemon juice to a cocktail mixer with ice and shake generously. Strain into a champagne flute. Top off with rosé. Stir in a pinch of cocktail glitter (optional). Garnish with a lemon twist.
3. Pink Goes Good with Green
AKA The Emerald Rose by @mykalekitchen
With complementary flavours of soothing florals along with crisp vegetals and herbs, this sip illustrates why the bond between Elphie and Glinda is so beloved by many.
Ingredients
- 1½ oz Empress 1908 Elderflower Rose Gin
- ½ oz Fresh Lemon Juice
- ¾ oz Cucumber Mint Syrup*
- Club Soda, to top
- Dried Rose buds & Mint Sprig, for garnish
Method
Add cucumber mint syrup and lemon juice to a cocktail glass. Add ice and club soda, leaving enough room to add gin. Float Empress 1908 Elderflower Rose gin on top. Garnish and enjoy!
*To make the syrup, combine 1 cup each of sugar and water to a saucepan and bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-high and continue to cook until the syrup starts to thicken. Remove from heat and stir in 1 chopped cucumber (about 300g) and 10-15 mint leaves. Allow syrup to cool to room temperature, cover and set aside for 30 minutes up to 2 hours. You can also keep it refrigerated overnight for a stronger flavor. Optionally add 1 drop of Pandan leaf food colouring for the vibrant emerald hue.
4. Changed for Good
AKA Empress & Tonic
Stunning, easy to whip up, and featuring all the deliciousness we need; this transformative G&T is as magical as can be!
Ingredients
- 2 oz Empress 1908 Indigo Gin
- 3 oz Premium Tonic Water
- Grapefruit Slice, for garnish
Method
Fill a copa glass with ice, add Empress 1908 Indigo Gin, and serve with tonic on the side. Garnish with a grapefruit slice.
5. The Emerald City
AKA The Cool as a Cucumber by @wildfolklore
As verdant as the City of Emeralds, this invigorating cocktail will transport you to the marvellous land of Oz upon first sip!
Ingredients
- 1½ oz Empress 1908 Cucumber Lemon Gin
- 2 oz Cucumber Melon Agua Fresca
- Sparkling Water, to top
- Flowering Mint Sprig and Cucumber Ribbon, to garnish
Method
Combine gin and agua fresca together in a shaker with ice and shake until chilled. Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice, top with sparkling water, and garnish.
*To make the agua fresca; combine 1 medium cucumber, 2 cups diced honeydew, a generous handful of mint leaves, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1 cup of water in a blender and blend until smooth. Strain out the pulp and store liquid in a sealed container for up to one week.
6. Before the Ruby Slippers
AKA The Raspberry Bramble by @foodie_renee
While the events of this tale occur before the iconic ruby slippers, we would certainly be remiss to make no mention of Dorothy’s adventures. So close your eyes, tap your heels three times together, and experience the fruity deliciousness of this treat!
Ingredients
- 2 oz Empress 1908 Elderflower Rose Gin
- 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
- ½ oz Simple Syrup
- ½ oz Raspberry Liqueur
- Fresh Raspberries and Gold Luster Dust, for garnish
Method
Combine gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake for 30 seconds, and pour into a cocktail glass. Top with crushed ice, and slowly pour in the raspberry liqueur. Garnish with fresh raspberries, and a sprinkle of gold luster dust. Enjoy!
