#NegroniWeek 2021

Every hour is aperitivo when it’s Negroni Week!

Happy Negroni Week! If you haven’t heard of this beloved Italian classic, we’re here to show you why why it’s one of our favourites.

The Negroni: A Short History

Let’s kick things off with a little history on this bittersweet creation. Legend has it that the now world-renowned recipe was invented at Caffe Casoni in Florence, Italy in 1919. Count Camillo Negroni reportedly requested the bartender strengthen his favourite cocktail: the Americano. To do so, the soda water was replaced with gin, and paired with Campari and sweet vermouth in equal parts. The result was what many today would call a masterpiece!

Negroni Basics:

Simple, classy and effortlessly delicious, the traditional Negroni is made up of 5 key elements: gin, bitter liqueur, vermouth, citrus and ice. Since its inception, the famed aperitivo cocktail has taken on many creative forms. From Negroni Biancos to Sbagliatos’, there’s a version for every palate and preference!

  • GIN: We recommend Empress 1908, of course! Find retailers near you using our store locator.
  • BITTER LIQUEUR: While the classic calls for Campari, you can switch it up with Luxardo Bitter Bianco, Suze, Amaro, or another bitter liqueur of your choice!
  • VERMOUTH: Typically, sweet vermouth is called on to complete this cocktail. However, dry vermouth and lillet blanc can also produce delicious results!
  • CITRUS: Though you certainly can’t go wrong with an orange twist, we love adding grapefruit to pack an extra bittersweet punch!
  • ICE: Our favourite way to keep it cool? A large ice cube or sphere! This keeps dilution low & slow and makes for a classy finish.
